Christ Church, the United Church of Canada, seeks a Director of Music on a permanent, part-time basis of approximately 15 hours per week to lead its 10:30am Sunday worship. This person will lead the music ministry and grow the membership in its various facets for this service in order to make the service vibrant, uplifting and inspiring. Job Description - Director of Music

 

Purpose

 

The Director of Music is to be the music leader and Òmusic shepherdÓ for the choir(s), instrumentalists and congregation for the 10:30 worship experience. This person will lead the music ministry and grow the membership in its various facets for this service in order to make the service vibrant, uplifting and inspiring.

 

Skills and Attributes

 

1. Strong musical gifts —vocal and instrumental -- in a variety of musical styles: classical blues, gospel, jazz, full orchestra, contemporary, folk, international. Proficiency with pipe organ, piano, keyboard. Ability to modify and arrange music as needed. Ability to accompany soloists and congregation.

 

2. Proven ability to lead, nurture, grow and develop vocal and instrumental musicians of various levels of training.

 

3. A vibrant Christian faith, and a clear ability to live and articulate that faith and an ability to pray and speak publicly.

 

4. Strong written and verbal communication skills as well as strong planning skills.

 

5. Willing to offer pastoral care, prayer, and support to members of the musical groups being led.

 

6. Collaborative, collegial and flexible leadership style.

 

7. Understand -- or be open to -- the ethos and theology of the United Church of Canada.  

 

Responsibilities

 

1. To plan, be present at, and direct, the music at the 10:30 worship service.

 

2. To provide musical liaison for other groups such as Bell and Chime choirs and their volunteer directors, lead, nurture and grow choirs, including weekly rehearsal and worship. This will include additional services (e.g. Christmas Eve, Good Friday).

 

3. Recruit, train, develop, grow and direct all choirs under her/his leadership and conduct regular rehearsals throughout the year, except for summer months or such other exceptions as may be arranged by the Organist and in consultation with the Worship Committee. Enlist assistance for music direction when needed.

 

4. Provide appropriate music for the theme of the service, or the seasons of the church year, in cooperation with the minister(s) and Worship Committee, and people responsible for the particular service. Collaborate with the ministers, as consultant and advisor, on musical matters in relation to the overall worship service to ensure that the act of worship may be developed to its fullest potential. Authorize the use of the organ, piano, and electronic keyboard within the protocols assumed by Christ Church.

5. Provide special music for wedding and funeral services upon engagement by the parties involved. Consult as required regarding the choice of music and other details.

 

6. Enlist assistance for additional music support or direction when needed. Provide arrangements for summer services, engage soloists, and supply leadership where needed. Provide a competent substitute during absences: vacation, study leave, and approved leaves for personal reasons.

 

7. Share in the selection of music, including the scheduling of soloists, solos, duets etc.

 

8. Provide pastoral care and ongoing contact with members of the musical groups. Open rehearsals with prayer.

 

9. Identify and arrange for repair and maintenance of the organ/piano/electronic keyboard within the protocols assumed by Christ Church.

 

10. Administer the annual allocation of funds in the music budget. Prepare a list of needs and suggestions regarding the music program.

 

11. Participate in the worship planning team meetings and meet weekly with the lead minister(s) for the upcoming service(s).

 

12. Maintain a healthy and cooperative working relationship with the Director of Music for the 9:00 a.m worship experience.

 

13. Order and maintain files of all music used. Ensure that copyright laws are respected.
